Cavin-Morris Gallery, \u00a0New York 2012\r\n\r\nIllustrated N\u00b011 of the catalog\r\n\r\nRecognizable by their geometrical patterns in the shape of an \"X\", the Ok Mountain shields have the same decoration as the engraved and painted doors of the ceremonial houses of this region.\r\n\r\nAccording to Barry Craig (The Shields of Melanesia. 2005. Page 125), \"the X pattern represents a stylized human figure, probably embodying an ancestor. The diamond point in the center is called matup bubil and represents his heart. The zigzag pattern represents a snake called durulian, a symbol among the telefolmin of humanity's lost opportunity for immortality.\"\r\n\r\nThese war shields could be used in magical rituals that took place before each battle.\r\n\r\nThey were kept in the men's house, alongside the skulls of ancestors. Sometimes a small bag containing human bones was attached to the shield. This same bag was carried by the warrior in battle.","photosdemo":[28335,25556,25557],"featured_image":"29242","oeuvre_vendue_":"Non","videooeuvre":0,"iframe_3d_oeuvre":""},"aioseo_notices":[],"featured_image_url":"https:\/\/artviewoasis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/5-2-2-scaled.jpg","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/artviewoasis.com\/fr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/oeuvres_frankmarceli\/25558","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/artviewoasis.com\/fr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/oeuvres_frankmarceli"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/artviewoasis.com\/fr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/oeuvres_frankmarceli"}],"acf:attachment":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/artviewoasis.com\/fr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/25557"},{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/artviewoasis.com\/fr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/25556"},{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/artviewoasis.com\/fr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/28335"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/artviewoasis.com\/fr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/29242"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/artviewoasis.com\/fr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=25558"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
