Hands resting on the abdomen above a downward-facing pelvis between curvilinear legs, knees delineated, feet joined at the base on a rounded form.\r\nThe head is proportionately large, with a curious hollowed-out cavity at the back of the skull, normally associated with figurines from the Boiken populations northwest of Angoram, rather than those from the Lower Sepik.\r\nThis may well be the sculptor's interpretation of a masked ceremony, widespread along this famous river.\r\n\r\nThis type of sculpture, probably representing a powerful spirit, was attached to a structure by means of a cord passing through the hole at the top of the skull. It was worn on the back by dancers during initiation ceremonies.\r\n\r\nCarved with a lithic tool, it was most probably collected before the First World War, when New Guinea was still under German administration. The fact that the figurine was found on a property in Hanover, Germany, reinforces this hypothesis.","photosdemo":[80875,80876,80877,80878],"featured_image":"80876","oeuvre_vendue_":"Non","videooeuvre":0,"iframe_3d_oeuvre":""},"aioseo_notices":[],"featured_image_url":"https:\/\/artviewoasis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/inter1-11.jpg","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/artviewoasis.com\/fr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/oeuvres_frankmarceli\/80879","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/artviewoasis.com\/fr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/oeuvres_frankmarceli"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/artviewoasis.com\/fr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/oeuvres_frankmarceli"}],"acf:attachment":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/artviewoasis.com\/fr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/80878"},{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/artviewoasis.com\/fr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/80877"},{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/artviewoasis.com\/fr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/80876"},{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/artviewoasis.com\/fr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/80875"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/artviewoasis.com\/fr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/80876"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/artviewoasis.com\/fr\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=80879"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
