This type of headdress has its origin in a hairstyle that married Zulu women wore with the same name, isicholo.
At the end of the 19th century, around the time the Zulu forces were defeated and their territory was taken, women began to wear hats imitating this hairstyle. These headdresses were usually made with a basketwork base that was then covered with fibers dyed with a plant-based pigment.
