Marble. H: 14 cm Roman art, 2nd century AD
Provenance : Numisart Ltd, Oxford, United Kingdom
The present head of Venus, once part of a marble statue, shows the goddess rising from the sea, wringing and arranging her hair. The sculpture is based on a Hellenistic proto-type that showed the goddess of love and beauty drying herself after being born -full-grown- from the sea off the coast of Cyprus.
