Fang reliquary figure

Fang people – Gabon – 19th Century – Wood
53 cm

Provenance:

Rachel Montagut, Barcelona

Paco Diaz, Madrid

Widespread throughout the Fang country, the cult of relics of deceased relatives was one of the main ritual pillars of the society.

Representative of Fang sculptural creation, this male statue on its cylindrical bark box belongs to the corpus of reliquary guardians, statues of ancestors known as eyema-byeri. Used in ancestral cults, they were intended to contain the relics of the lineage’s most illustrious ancestors.
